Mahomes and Chiefs are Ravens’ Kryptonite
The Monday Night Football matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs was an overhyped fluke thanks to Chiefs’ MVP quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.
“Our kryptonite,” Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson said in a post-game interview.
This chapter of the Mahomes-Jackson saga seemed promising as entering the game, the Ravens had the highest-scoring defense and the Chiefs well, they have Mahomes and a solid defense. But fans didn’t tune in to watch their defenses, they wanted to see offensive fireworks.
In a rivalry that has been deemed the modern “Brady-Manning rivalry,” it’s been all Chiefs thus far. Okay, maybe we’re getting a little too far ahead of ourselves. Let’s remember that Brady’s New England Patriots beat Manning’s Indianapolis Colts in their first six matchups. Mahomes and company have only taken three from Jackson’s Ravens.
If this is indeed the modern “Brady-Manning rivalry,” then Mahomes is performing like the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady. Not to mention, Mahomes relishes being in the spotlight and more importantly stays calm and cool when the stadium’s bright lights turn on.
However, Mahomes isn’t the next Brady, he’s the only Mahomes. He is more agile, entertaining and definitely faster than Brady. With his masterful performance on Monday which included 31/42, 385 yds, 4 TDs, Mahomes became the fastest quarterback to reach 10,000 career passing yards (34 games), per CBS.
Under the guidance of Kansas City head coach Andy Reid, Mahomes has flourished from a raw and gifted rookie into an MVP-caliber quarterback. No, scratch that. He has become the face of the NFL. Mahomes is the epitome of what it means to be a quarterback in today’s NFL— dual-threat superstar who can handle a pro-style offense.
With their victory on Monday the Chiefs proved that they are the team to beat in the NFL when No. 15 is under center, period. As Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said, “They're better, obviously.”
